Word of the Week: Wealth

Stewardship Series 2022

Deuteronomy 8:11-20 (NKJV)
11 “Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today,
A. The blessed life may cause me to have spiritual amnesia.

12 lest—when you have eaten and are [a]full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; 13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are [b]multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; 14 when your heart [c]is lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; 15 who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty land where there was no water; who brought water for you out of the flinty rock; 16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end—

Deuteronomy 6:10 (NKJV)
Caution Against Disobedience

10 “So it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of which He [a]swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities which you did not build,
B. I can be prideful about something I bought.

Deuteronomy 8:12 (NKJV)
12 lest—when you have eaten and are [a]full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them;

C. I can be prideful about something I built.

1 Timothy 6:9-12 (NKJV)
9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
The Good Confession

11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
17 then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’
18 “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may [d]establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

D. God allows me to acquire wealth.

• THE PENALTY OF PRIDE IN THE BELESSED LIFE (19-20)
19 Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the Lord your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish. 20 As the nations which the Lord destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the Lord your God.

E. When I forget God, I follow other Gods.
F. When I forget God, I serve other Gods.
G. Pride will cause me to perish.
H. Pride is the greatest danger in the blessed Christian life.
